Introduction

This website is all about Ancient Egyptian Pyramids and Pharaohs. Pyramids held the pharaoh’s mummified body, and all of his belongings so he could use them in the afterlife. These pyramids were built by Egyptians whose villages were developed by the pharaoh and by slaves. Most pyramids had a maze of hallways and booby-traps so grave robbers could not find the pharaoh and his belongings. Pharaohs were Ancient Egyptian kings.

Khufu

Khufu or Cheops, as the Greeks called him was born in the 26th century B.C. from King Sneferu and Queen Hetepheres I. Khufu built the Great Pyramid. Khufu is known as a cruel ruler according to an Egyptian legend. It was written in a story during the Middle Kingdom on how he wanted to learn some of the secrets of the god Thoth, so he could help build his pyramid. Khufu became king at the age of about 20 and ruled for about 23 more years. He died in 2566bc.

Tutankhamun

One of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs’ is Tutankhamun. Although we don’t know who his parents were, he was born in 1330bc. He lived in the palace of Queen Nefertiti in Amarna until he became king of Egypt when he was only nine years old. After becoming king of Egypt, he married Nefertiti. They ended up having two stillborn children. He unexpectedly died at the age of eighteen where his vizier, or his high official, Ay quickly became king. After modern examinations on Tutankhamun’s corpse, scientists found that he was most likely killed from a hit in the head that could have been an accident or a murder. They suspect if it was a murder it was most-likely his vizier because he became king so unexpectedly. He was buried in a small tomb close to his father’s or grandfather’s in the Valley of the Kings. His tomb was later discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter.

The Great Pyramid

The Great Pyramid lives up to its name as being Earth’s largest pyramid and is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is 481 feet high, more than twice the size of the Step Pyramid of Djoser. This pyramid was built by Pharaoh Khufu in 2550bc in a city called Giza. The Great Pyramid was built with about 2.3 million stones that weighed about 2.5 to 15 tons each. There are three burial chambers in the Great Pyramid. The first one is called the Subterranean Chamber. It is located underground. The next two burial chambers are both located above ground. One was called the King’s Chamber and the other is called the Queen’s Chamber. The King’s chamber was built for the pharaoh.

The Step Pyramid of Djoser

The Step Pyramid of Djoser was Egypt’s first pyramid. In 2611bc it was the largest pyramid of its time. It was only 204 feet tall and was located in Saqqara. Pharaoh Djoser built his pyramid with help from slaves and other villagers. In order to find Pharaoh Djoser’s burial chamber, which was located underground, you would have to make your way through a maze of hallways. These hallways were build to outsmart grave robbers.
